Richmond Holds Memorial Vigil for Taylor Behl & Her Family
Friday night on a college campus brings to mind the stereotypical P-A-R-T-Y. Not this Friday night; not on this university campus. The gathering of young people in Richmond, VA, on the Virginia Commonwealth University campus had one stereotype correct -- rain. Rain, the one thing that many associate with funerals and sadness.
At about 9 P.M., the ceremony which had been planned in Monroe Park, moved indoors to the Student Commons at VCU. A gathering of students, friends, and the public honored the memory of Taylor Behl, tragically ripped from their midst by some monster and for reasons that we may never know.
Matt Behl, Taylor's father, addressed the gathering thanking them for their support and prayers during the long ordeal that began just over a month ago. Mr. Behl kissed his daughter goodbye on September 5, Memorial Day, after she spent part of the long weekend with him. He told her that he loved her and his final words to his 17-year old daughter were "be careful."
Taylor's mother, Janet Pelasara, could not attend the vigil as the events of the past few days caught up to her, leaving her too mentally and emotionally exhausted. VCU's Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Student Affairs, broke down and sobbed as he told the gathering, "It's a tragedy. It's a tragedy for Taylor Behl's family and friends."
In another development, Ben Fawley has now been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The weapon was turned into the police before the first search of Fawley's apartment by an unnamed attorney. Fawley has several convictions in Richmond, and in other states for various crimes.
The Richmond Times Dispatch is reporting that Richmond Commonwealth Attorney, David Hicks, informed them that unless evidence is developed to show that Taylor's death occurred in Richmond, Virginia law requires prosecution in the jurisdiction in which the body is discovered. Since Mathews County has only one prosecutor, Mr. Hicks says that his office will provide assistance in the prosecution if it happens in Mathews.

Below is a summary of an interview with Janet Pelasara and George Peterson on the FOX News show, On the Record with Greta Van Susteren

On Thursday, Janet Pelasara appeared on FOX News show, On the Record speaking about the discovery of Taylor's remains. Ms. Pelasara spoke highly of the Richmond Police Department and how they handled the notifications to her about Taylor. At one point during the interview, Ms. Pelasara demonstrated her true strength by describing the pain she saw in the face of the two officers that came to break the news to her. She recognized how difficult it had to be for for the officers to give her that kind of news.
Ms. Pelasara told Greta that she received notification from Richmond PD, about three hours before the media had the story on Wednesday. She related that the police arranged for one of her cousins to be at her house just before the police arrived. It was then that the police described finding a shallow grave, and informed her that they suspected the body in that grave was her daughter. The officers told her that the black hoodie that Taylor wore was there, and that was the basis for their belief.
Ms. Pelasara described to Greta how the VCU campus police showed various pictures that Ben Fawley had posted on his websites, and stored in his computers. One of Fawley's ex-girlfriends recognized the area.
George Peterson, the attorney for Taylor's family, also spoke to Greta about possible suspects. As Mr. Peterson stated in the press conference held early Thursday, he believes that the best suspect in this case is already in custody. He spoke about the grand jury investigation, saying that he believes that on Wednesday the grand jury heard from eight different people about the case. Peterson also said that he understands that the next time the grand jury will hear from witnesses will be on October 19.
Greta asked Taylor's mother if she planned to stay as involved with the investigation as she has been over the past month. Ms. Pelasara told Greta that she will be happy receiving updates, as the police continue their investigation. "They can take care of the investigation. I'm quite happy to hear updates." She says that she believes the police have used the term "suspect" in relation to Ben Fawley.
Greta, in her usuall direct-and-to-the-point manner, "You must want to kill Ben Fawley." Ms. Pelasara, haltingly, and while nodding her head responded that if Ben Fawley is the one that killed Taylor then "I could feel like that." A few moments later, Ms. Pelasara summed it all up saying, "He'll get his." When asked about other suspects in the case, Janet told Greta that she is still waiting to see if the other "skater guys" had any involvement, and if they did, "they'll all pay."
Asked if she had ever heard of Jesse Schultz before Taylor disappeared, Ms. Pelasara told Greta that when Taylor was home over the weekend she mentioned going skateboarding with three guys. She went on to say that "Ian and Jesse were two of the names that she (Taylor) mentioned," in the contnection with some skater friends of Taylor's. Hearing a new name, Greta asked about Ian. Ms. Pelasara stated it was her belief that Ian also worked at the Village Cafe, along with Jesse. Mr. Peterson confirmed that as his belief also, and stated that he understood that Ian was one of the eight people that appeared before the grand jury on Wednesday. Asked by Greta about any other names of people that may have seen Taylor on the night she disappeared, Janet told her that "Kevin, the cook at the Village Cafe... he's one of the three skaters."
Greta asked what Ms. Pelasara's reaction was to Fawley's claim of being aducted, assaulted, robbed, and dumped on a dirt road. Shaking her head and with a sardonic smile, Ms. Pelasara responded, "Truly, when I was reading that article, I expected to read about aliens. I mean that aliens had abducted him. I believe that it is just total fabrication." Mr. Peterson then added that because Fawley's story specifies between 5 and 6 in the morning, that will likely be the timeline that is determined later for when he did something to Taylor.

Thank you to Gail for alerting me to the fact that one of Fawley's infamous websites has been completely shut down. If you have visited his Devian Art website, you would have been able to see a bunch of his pictures, and you could have read through some of his ramblings. When you go to his site now, you get a message that says, "Due to a pending legal investigation, this page has been closed. We would also like to state that this user has never been affiliated with the management of deviantART, Inc."
