Writing for The Intelligencer out of Doylestown, PA, Freda R. Savana, recounts the memories of one local law enforcement official regarding Ben Fawley. "He was a real big anarchist," said Lt. Michael Cummings. "Some kids just dress the role but he really was an anarchist. He believed in creating all kinds of mayhem." Fawley must have really been a character for Lt. Cummings to remember him so clearly 15 years later. Cummings remembered Fawley as "just kind of a strange kid," which may explain remembering Fawley 15 years later.
Still speaking of Fawley, he said, "He was very active for one year." During one year Fawley had interaction with the police 11 times. His offenses ranged from nuisance skateboarding offenses, theft of bicycles, all the way to stealing cars. Cummings remembered one incident where Fawley pulled out of his grandmother's driveway, and police attempted to stop him in order to question him about a stolen car. What would have been a routine stop soon turned into a dangerous chase. The chase ended with Fawley crashing his car.
The court records on Fawley are not clear about whether he ever served jail time for his offenses. The records show that Fawley was fined, and then never paid the fines. At one point a bench warrant was issued for Fawley for failure to pay the fines.
With legal troubles in Ohio, then Pennsylvania, a police history in Richmond, and now his arrest on 16 counts of possession of child pornography, it appears as if Fawley has run afoul of the law for most of his life. Fawley is being held without bond pending his preliminary hearing set for October 31, perhaps a coincidental date considering Fawley's fascination with skulls and the goth subculture.
Kirsten Nielson, from the Richmond Police public information office, explained why they stopped refering to Fawley as a "person-of-interest." Nielson told Savana, "His status is still the same. He is still on the radar...he is very much a part of the case." The termp "person-of-interest" is so closely associated with the word "suspect" that the police felt they needed to make a technical change in how they refer to Fawley. The word "suspect" cannot be used at this point, as there is no evidence of a crime.
On Wednesday, Police asked citizens for information regarding stolen Virginia personalized tags that read GRN ERTH. Police say the tags may be connected to Fawley, who though no longer considered a "person of interest," still remains a central player. There are several people with whom the police are talking in connection with the case.
The personalized tags were reported stolen, and the original owner of the tags has nothing to do with the case. Someone reported that they saw a car bearing the plates, and the police need to talk to anyone that has seen the car. The plates are believed to have been in the possession of Fawley at one time. Fawley collects license plates. The picture to the left was taken by Fawley and posted on one of his many online journal websites. (Click the picture to see an enlarged view.)
The following information is what the police need to determine if the plates have anything to do with Taylor's disappearance. If you see the car, make note of the information listed below, then call the police at (804) 514-TIPS. If you are able to safely call the police from a cell phone, please do so.
> what type of car was it
> any unusual markings that appear unique to this car
> where was this car seen
> when was this car seen
> who was driving the car (description, identifying marks, etc.)
Several of Taylor's friends have expressed an opinion that they believe Taylor has "gone into hiding." The reason behind this hypothesis vary greatly. The police will not comment on any theories, stating that any such comment could compromise their investigation.
George O. Peterson is a family friend as well as the family attorney and he disputes any notion that Taylor may be a runaway. Peterson says that Taylor and her mother, Janet Pelasara, have a very close relationship. He says that this is just not the type of person to leave without notice. Peterson says that he still suspects that "someone is engaged in some sort of criminal enterprise."
In an unrelated case, another teen missing from Richmond is believed to have met up with a man she met on the Internet. 17-year old high school student, Monica Rose Sharp vanished while walking her dog on September 18, 2005, near her home. The man believed to have met with Sharp is 57-year old Jeffery Nichols, from Illinois. Nichols drives a green 4-door Oldsmobile Alero with IL license plates 6219015. If you see this car, or have any information, please call the police at (804) 646-5100.
