In a disappointing announcement this morning, Richmond police spokesperson, Cynthia Price says that in the early stages of the investigation they developed several "persons of interest." She said that among those, Ben Fawley was one. Now that they have had the opportunity to interview him, they no longer consider him relevant to the case. You may recall that the police also interviewed the resident at an apartment when a police bloodhound tracked a scent from Taylor's car to his apartment. The man living at the apartment was believe to be a friend of a skateboarder friend of Taylor. The police also interviewed the skateboarder, and searched his car. The man living at the apartment submitted to a polygraph, and later told reporters that the police told him that he did not pass on two questions: whether or not he knew Taylor, and if Taylor had been in his car. The man denied that he knew her and denied that he had been in her car. The skateboarder declined to submit to a polygraph.
As I write this, three weeks ago to the minute was the last time that police can establish that anyone saw Taylor Behl. Taylor was last seen at about 10:30 P.M. on September 5, 2005, Labor Day. The information, as we have it at the moment is that at around 10 P.M., Ben Fawley walked Taylor back to her dorm from his apartment, only a short distance away.
Taylor then entered her dorm room and reportedly spoke to her roommate, and her roommate's boyfriend. Saying that she was going to give the two some privacy, Taylor told her roommate that she would be back in a few hours. Taylor left her room sometime between 10:20 P.M. and 10:30 P.M. From that point on, nobody has come forward to say that they have either seen her, or heard from her. Based on Taylor saying she would return in a "few hours," she should have returned to her room sometime between 1:30 A.M. and 2:00 A.M. on September 6, 2005. When Taylor's roommate did not see or hear from Taylor all day on Tuesday, September 6, she called the VCU campus police around 1:30 A.M. on Tuesday, September 7, 2005 - a full 24 hours after she expected to Taylor to return to their room.
Extrapolating from all of the news coverage thus far, that makes Taylor's roommate, the roommate's boyfriend, and Ben Fawley the last three people known to have seen Taylor within one-half hour of her disappearance. If the police have spoken to, or confirmed that anyone else has seen or had contact with Taylor since she left her room, they have not released that information to the public. Those of us following the case certainly hope that the police are interviewing people that had contact with Taylor after she left her room.
Shortly after Ben Fawley's arraignment hearing this morning, Ms. Pelasara spoke to the media. Ms. Pelasara encouraged people to check the website:
"Friends of Taylor"
The site has information about how everyone can help. Part of that help is in raising money to bolster the reward fund and to offset the costs of the family as they focus all of their energy on finding Taylor. Pelasara mentioned that a fund raiser concert is in the works in Vienna, VA, where Pelasara and Taylor live. The proceeds from the concert will go directly into the reward fund.
