Behl's mother, Janet Pelasara, told Syler on The Early Show Monday that the last three weeks have been "excruciating, heartbreaking and horribly frustrating.
"I'm taking it day by day, and trying not to think about how, what kind of situation she could be in. I try not to feel, and just hope that if she can hear me, come home. You know? If they'll just let her walk away and just come on home."
But she says Fawley's arrest gives her "hope that maybe he knows something and, while he's behind bars, he'll share what he knows that would help us, help the police locate Taylor and bring her home."
Monroe, the police chief, joined Pelasara on The Early Show Monday and noted that, "We're just pushing along. Every day, there is a number of things that we have to follow up on. There is an enormous amount of evidence that we've collected, both from Taylor's car and from the search warrants that we issued on Friday. It's a matter of linking any evidence that we have recovered to any information that we have in our possession or may have in our possession in the future."
Monroe wouldn't say whether authorities consider Fawley a suspect in Behl's disappearance.
"We don't know that yet," he said. "Quite naturally, he's one of only a few people that had contact with Taylor in the preceding 24 hours of her disappearance. He admitted to the fact that he was with her the night of her disappearance. So quite naturally, whatever information that he could provide could be of great value to us."
Ben Fawley appeared before Judge Kimberly O'Donnell in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. Fawley faces 16 counts of child pornography. The charges are based in part of computers seized last week by Richmond police when they executed a search warrant at Fawley's apartment. Mike Jagels, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney, said that among the computers and related equipment seized during the searches, that investigators found evidence of at least 30 movies depicting children involving children. The childred in the movies were mostly between the ages of 10 and 14; however, some children appeared to be as young as 1 or 2 years old.
Noticeably absent during the arraignment was Richmond attorney Chris Collins, who has been representing Fawley. None of the reports indicate why Collins was not in court today. Fawley, who is unemployed and reportedly on disability because of a bi-polar disorder, told Judge O'Donnell that could not afford to hire an attorney. The court appointed a public defender, Richard Johnson, to represent Fawley.
When the court heard motions regarding setting bail, Jagels raised issues about the likelihood of flight posed by Fawley. Fawley, who had been otherwise quiet and unanimated during the hearing, was seen shaking his head and snorting. Jagels asked the court for "no bail" citing the missing 17-year old VCU coed, Taylor Behl. Johnson objected stating that the Behl case had no relevance to the current charges. Judge O'Donnell disagreed with Johnson, and ordered that Fawley be held without bail. The court then set October 31 for Fawley's preliminary hearing.
According to Jagels, Fawley has been convicted of three assaults in the Richmond area over the past three years. Two of the assaults involved domestic violence involving women. In earlier reports, court records from Ohio indicated that Fawley had brushes with the courts system there too.
Authorities continue to say that the current charges agains Fawley are unrelated to the disappearance of Taylor Behl. Behl disappeared 3 weeks ago, leaving her dorm room at about 10:30 P.M., telling her dormmate that she would return in about 3 hours. The search for Behl began a little over 24 hours after she failed to return to her room.
Fawley remains a "person-of-interest" in Behl's disappearance. He was one of the last people to see Behl the night she went missing. Fawley has also admitted to having a romantic/sexual relationship with Taylor. The legal age-of-consent in the Commonwealth of Virginia is 18. Taylor will not be 18 untilOctober 13, seventeen more days. In reference to Fawley's public admissions to the sexual nature of the relationship may face charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Jagels also said that fawley could face additional charges for distributing child pornography. For the current charges, if convicted, Fawely could face up to 80 years in prison.
In interviews over the weekend, and again on The Early Show, Taylor's mother, Janet Pelasara expressed hope that Fawley would reveal information about the location of her daughter. During the interview on the CBS show this morning, Ms. Pelasara, spoke to her daughter saying, "[I] just hope that if she can hear me, come home." Appearing to speak to captors, if that be the case, she said, "just let her walk away and just come on home."
During the same show this morning, Chief Rodney Monroe said that the police are processing a large amount of evidence. He said that it takes time to examine the evidence and finding correlations between it and the information that they have.
